Maddy Sandwell

From Patient to Purpose: Maddy’s journey from diagnosis at 38 to advocacy and advancing breast cancer research.

At 38 years old, Maddy Sandwell received a breast cancer diagnosis that would change the course of her life.

A speech-language pathologist with over 15 years of experience in healthcare, Maddy is now transforming her personal experience into purpose — redirecting her career toward oncology, patient advocacy, fundraising, and community engagement.

What initially seemed like a reassuring health check quickly turned into a much more complex and unexpected journey.

After first raising concerns with a physician remotely, Maddy was advised to undergo routine imaging, including a mammogram and ultrasound. The results were clear, indicating no signs of malignancy, and the reassurance was enough to return to everyday life.

However, changes noticed the following summer prompted a return visit. This time, an in-person examination led to a different interpretation of symptoms, with initial clinical impressions suggesting the presentation did not align with typical characteristics of breast cancer. Despite that, further testing was ordered.

The follow-up imaging and biopsy moved quickly, ultimately leading to a confirmed diagnosis of breast cancer. What followed marked the beginning of a personal health journey defined by rapid transition from reassurance to diagnosis, underscoring how symptoms can evolve over time and how initial tests, while important, may not always capture early or changing disease.

Today, she is a passionate voice in the breast cancer community across Burlington and Hamilton, supporting others affected by the disease while advocating for better, earlier detection and continued investment in research.

Maddy believes research changes outcomes. That’s why she continues to support Breast Cancer Canada through programs, events, and advocacy efforts focused on improving the future of breast cancer care for every Canadian.
