When Natalie Wilson was first diagnosed with breast cancer, she never imagined she would face it not once, but three times. Over the years, she has undergone more than twenty surgeries — including a bilateral mastectomy and multiple reconstruction procedures. Each diagnosis brought its own challenges, from Ductal Carcinoma In Situ (DCIS) to Paget’s disease, requiring personalized treatment decisions at every turn.
Through it all, Natalie learned that breast cancer is not one disease — and no two experiences are the same. She also saw first-hand how outcomes are shaped by more than medical care. Access to early detection, culturally safe support, and equitable treatment pathways can look very different depending on who you are and where you live.
For many women — especially those from Black, Indigenous, and racialized communities — these differences can mean facing additional barriers within the healthcare system. Natalie’s journey opened her eyes to the urgent need for research that represents every person affected by breast cancer.
Today, she is a powerful advocate for change. Natalie believes that advancing breast cancer research must include every voice and every background — ensuring that new discoveries lead to better outcomes for all. Her dream is for a future where identity never determines access, and where every diagnosis receives care that is precise, compassionate, and informed by real-world diversity.
“Progress means every woman — in every Canadian community — is seen, heard, and cared for,” Natalie says. “No one should feel alone in this.”
Natalie shares her story to inspire understanding, action, and equity — reminding us that inclusive research saves lives.
Breast Cancer Canada is grateful to Natalie for using her voice to drive awareness, inspire change, and champion a future where every person facing breast cancer has the care they deserve.
“When I started treatment, I was the youngest person in the room… Now, that’s not really the case.”
The most important thing was living every day to the fullest – and the memories.
“With more research and more awareness, we can ensure fewer women are blindsided the way I was.”
Breast Cancer Canada donations fund life-saving research that directly impacts Canadian patients. That means better answers, bigger breakthroughs – and more personalized treatment for every breast cancer diagnosis.
Our suite of digital tools are each designed to help individuals better manage their breast cancer journey through education, research and personalized insights, while also elevating the patient voice.
